A Weekend Post & Teachable Moments

This labor day weekend I would like to introduce something new to the blog called "Teachable Moments". From now on each week (give or take a few days ;) ) you will find a post from me discussing what God is teaching me. Simple enough, right? So this last Friday of August I would like to share with you what God has been doing in my heart.

One of the things God has been teaching me is trust. I am constantly learning to place my reliance on God. This is a difficult thing for me to do. Not because God isn't trustworthy, but because I like to be self-reliant. I'll be honest, I feel much better when I am in control of things. Therefore, I am working on relinquishing my self-reliance and giving my trust to God.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Place your trust in the Eternal; rely on Him completely;
    never depend upon your own ideas and inventions.
Give Him the credit for everything you accomplish,
    and He will smooth out and straighten the road that lies ahead.

The other thing that I'm working on right now is forgiveness. Recently God has revealed to me that I have been holding unforgiveness in my heart. This has been really tough for me as well because it's hard to move past the wounds that have been left on my heart. But I know that forgiving those who have hurt me will set me free from the hurt that I sometimes feel and will allow me to move forward and not dwell on the past. Not to mention that scripture warns not forgiving others can lead to God not forgiving me. Needless to say, forgiveness is essential. Though I know I can't do it on my own, I know that with God even I can forgive.

Matthew 6:14-15

If you forgive people when they sin against you, then your Father will forgive you when you sin against Him and when you sin against your neighborBut if you do not forgive your neighbors’ sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
