Have you ever just smiled at a stranger on the street as you passed by? It is one of my favorite things to do. I love seeing the reaction of the people as I walk by them. It is amazing how much you can tell about a person by the way they react to a stranger’s smile. Some people will shy away and avoid eye contact at all costs. Others will smile right back at you, and sometimes even exchange a “Hello!” My personal favorite, the one that always tends to make me chuckle, are the ones that look at you like you are crazy. Who smiles at a stranger walking down the street for no reason?
As I was walking around the mall recently, I smiled at a girl as she walked past. She had this very sad disposition about her, and she looked away. I thought to myself, “I wonder what reaction I would get if I smiled at everyone I walk by in the mall today.” So, I made a game of it. As I was leaving the mall that day I felt incredible. I felt God whisper in my heart that in smiling at every one that I passed by that day, I was expressing His love. Who knows what was going on in the lives of the people that I passed by that day. Who knows if a smile from a stranger was just what they needed to encourage them and get them through the rest of their day.
I felt God challenge me one step further. What am I doing to express His love to everyone I come in contact with? What am I doing to leave the fingerprint of Christ on everyone I meet?
We leave fingerprints everywhere we go. Everything we touch, everything we pick up, anything that we come in contact with we are leaving our fingerprints behind. What if we could be intentional about the fingerprints that we leave behind? What if we could intentionally leave the fingerprints of Christ everywhere we went?
What if today you step out of your comfort zone and ask the cashier at Wal-Mart how her day is going? What if you genuinely listened as she told you about how busy she was, or how she can’t wait to see her grandkids after work, or how she has an exciting weekend ahead? What if you smiled at everyone you passed on the street? What about the fingerprints that you are leaving behind in your friendships and relationships with family?
The way we interact with those we come in contact with is a great way to share the love of Christ. We have the opportunity to make someone feel important, special, valued, and loved. It doesn’t have to be something big; all it takes is a small gesture. All it takes is smiling at a stranger as they walk by. It doesn’t take any work to leave fingerprints behind, we do without trying. All it takes is being intentional about leaving the fingerprints of Christ everywhere we go.
So, today I am challenging you. “Be somebody that makes everyone feel like a somebody.” Be intentional about leaving the fingerprints of Christ behind.
