Teachable Moments: Bread Alone

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
Matthew 4:4

If you’re looking to dig deeper, you can find the original context of this verse here
 Deuteronomy 8

The other night I watched an online church sermon that spoke to my heart in so many ways. Today Matthew 4:4 came to mind and I have to say that I have really been feeling that hunger for Jesus lately. I've been so hungry to understand him more, to seek what he wants from me.

This is one of the passages that was shared in that Sermon...

Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
    and his understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary
    and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary,
    and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord
    will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
    they will run and not grow weary,
    they will walk and not be faint.
Isaiah 40:28-31

What an encouraging word it is. It reminds us that God gives us all that we need, that even when we grow tired of our circumstances that he isn't weary, and he will give us the energy and strength that we need to continue. For "Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength."

Lately I have been asking God what to do about my job situation.

In all of my frustration and exhaustion job-hunting this summer I'm finally throwing my hands up in the air and saying "Okay God! WHAT do you want from me!" because obviously I have NO idea. I was feeling like I was doing everything that I possibly could to get a good start-out job in my career and I just didn't know what else to do.

Then, this week Colossians 3 came to mind, which says

"Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." - Colossians 3:22-24

Today God told me to do ANYTHING. He used THIS article to help tell me that.

God is saying “Hillary, whatever job you find to do, work at it with all your heart like you’re working directly for me. You know that when you do your work will not go unrewarded.”

So if you’re job hunting like me, or trying to figure out what God wants you to do, I hope that you find encouragement in the fact that God is here to help you with whatever you need, and that all of the hard work you are doing will not be for nothing.

  1. Yessss! Amen! So much truth in this post. I have felt the same exact way the last 6 months, and then when I finally did land my "dream job", I'm extremely overwhelmed and depressed. It's so mysterious how God works, but I do know one thing: He leads us and calls us to things/situations that we never knew we needed, but it's necessary in order for his Kingdom to be seen to those around us. Loved the scriptures you chose. They are so encouraging!

  2. Thanks so much Jenna! And yes, God really does work so mysteriously. It's crazy cool how he uses are circumstances to prepare us for what are future holds.
